Surfing For Young Adults With Cancer
Due to COVID 19 this event will be postponed to 2021. We hope to bring you updates soon.

In participation with the Antwerp University Hospital we founded a charity for Young Adults With Cancer.

(Young) adults with cancer need positive experiences. This can help them to break the social isolation that a cancer diagnosis and treatment often means.

Surfing combines physical challenge, technique and a form of mindfulness. Learning to surf is to fight yourself and the waves, accept your limitations and to always keep on trying. It has been described in the literature that surfing has a positive effect on the quality of life, the self-confidence and well-being of adolescents. Furthermore, it also reduces feelings of depression and anxiety. References for this literature study can be obtained via moca@uza.be.

For who? We specifically target (young) adults with cancer from the age of 16. Being able to swim (crawl) is a requirement.

What do you get? Medical fitness will be tested prior to participation. Afterwards we go through a course of general and specific training courses to brave the sea (swimming sessions, exercise therapy with specific attention to the surfing muscles and a personalized exercise schedule for the home).

The objective is: an interim initiation wave surfing on the North Sea a surfing holiday in Portugal in the fall of 2020, under the guidance of certified surf instructors.

Participant registration for this charity is via the Antwerp University Hospital and is now closed for 2020.
